What a bank does here: it takes your deposit, lends it to borrowers at a higher rate, keeps the spread and pays you a slice as interest. What you do instead: you can supply stablecoins like USDC directly to a lending protocol and receive the interest borrowers pay — without the bank in the middle, and without the bank’s insurance either.
There is no free lunch. On-chain savings rates are paid by real borrowers, change every block, and carry risks a bank account does not: smart-contract bugs, stablecoin depegs and governance mistakes. FDIC-insured high-yield savings accounts paid roughly 4–5% in early 2026, so a crypto rate has to be judged against that safe baseline.
Key concepts
- Stablecoins. Tokens designed to track one US dollar. The market topped roughly $315B in Q1 2026, with USDT the largest and USDC second.
- Who pays the yield. Borrowers on protocols such as Aave, Morpho, Compound and Spark pay interest; lenders receive most of it after a protocol reserve cut.
- The GENIUS Act. Signed July 18, 2025, it bans stablecoin issuers from paying holders yield just for holding. It does not ban lending your coins to borrowers through DeFi.
- Tokenized T-bills. Tokens backed by short-term US Treasuries — closer to a money-market fund than a bank account.
- APY vs APR. APY includes compounding; APR does not. Compare like with like.
