Multisig for Families: Shared Custody Without a Bank

What a bank would do — and what you do instead

A bank keeps your money in its vault and verifies you with ID, passwords and a fraud team. When you self-custody, the vault is a device or a set of keys, and the “fraud team” is your own habits. There is no reset button and no branch to visit, so the routines in this guide — writing things down, testing recovery, sending small amounts first — do the work a bank’s back office normally does. The upside is that nobody can freeze, lend out or lose your coins on your behalf.

The problem multisig solves

A single-key wallet has two failure modes: the key is stolen, or the key is lost. A bank solves both with paperwork and a call centre. Multisig solves them with math. In a 2-of-3 setup, a thief who steals one key cannot move funds, and you can still move funds if you lose one key.

Common family setups

SetupWho holds keysGood for
2-of-3, all familyTwo spouses plus a key in a safe-deposit boxCouples who want joint control
2-of-3, with a helperYou, a family member, and a collaborative-custody servicePeople who want a backstop without giving up control
3-of-5Several family members and locationsLarger amounts and multi-generation planning

Bitcoin supports multisig natively. On Ethereum and other smart-contract chains, multisig is a contract wallet such as Safe. The ideas are the same; the tools differ.

Frequently asked questions

Is multisig overkill for small amounts?

Often, yes. Many people start with a single hardware wallet and move to multisig once a loss would be life-changing.

What happens to multisig funds if I die?

Your heirs can move funds if they can gather enough keys and the configuration. That only works if you documented the process clearly in advance.
