What a bank does here: nothing quite like it — banks do not secure a network. What you do instead: on proof-of-stake chains like Ethereum and Solana you can lock coins to help validate transactions and receive newly issued coins and fees in return.
Staking rewards are paid by the protocol, not by a borrower. That makes them different from lending yield: you are paid in the same asset you stake, so if the price falls 30%, a few percent of rewards will not save you. Staking is a way to avoid dilution on a coin you already want to hold, not a reason to buy one.
Key concepts
- Native staking. Running a validator yourself or delegating to one. Most control, most technical effort.
- Exchange staking. An exchange stakes for you and keeps a commission. Easiest, but the exchange holds the coins.
- Liquid staking. Protocols such as Lido, Rocket Pool or Jito give you a receipt token (stETH, rETH, JitoSOL) that keeps earning and can be moved or used elsewhere.
- Slashing. Validators that misbehave or go offline can lose part of the stake.
- Fees. The headline rate before commission is not what you receive. Commissions range from roughly 10% at Lido to 35% for standard Coinbase retail ETH staking (as of late September 2026).
